A National Water Safety Council (NWSC) has been formed by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), to take the lead to promote and enhance water safety in Singapore. The Council set up was announced by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports, at the Boat Asia 2007 on 19 April 2007. Click here for a copy of the press release. |

This follows the completion of the review of water safety measures and initiatives in Singapore by the inter-agency Water Safety Taskforce. The formation of the NWSC is one of the Taskforce's key recommendations. The Council will serve as the national coordinating body to drive and sustain initiatives overseeing all aspects of Water Safety. The Council, building upon the foundation laid by the Taskforce, has set itself six key tasks: |

- Promote a water safety culture among all Singaporeans;
- Initiate and coordinate public education efforts on water safety in swimming pools and open water (e.g. the sea);
- Increase children's participation in water survival and swimming programmes through various platforms;
- Work with the relevant government agencies to promote and encourage swimming pool designs that enhance water safety;
- Embark on further research on issues related to the prevention of drowning; and
- Establish national water safety standards.

The Council, formed by MCYS and comprising members from the people, private and public sectors appointed on a two-year term, is chaired by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang and Honorary Advisor to the Singapore Life Saving Society.
