Under MCYS' Eldercare Masterplan,
MCYS will continue to devote resources to develop a network of services
and programmes for the elderly and their caregivers. Elderly persons need social
contacts to keep them active and integrated in the community. Studies
have shown that activities can keep a person's mind occupied and
help him to maintain a positive self image and enhance his mental
well being. In addition, with the valuable experience that the elderly
posessed, ample avenues should be made available for them to remain
engaged and play an active role in the society.
They could join the following activities and programme:

Senior Citizens' Clubs
By becoming members of the Senior Citizens' Clubs (SCCs) , senior citizens can benefit from
the activities that the SCCs organise. Our seniors can take
part in their cultural, social, recreational, sports activities,
as well as talks and other ad hoc events, which will encourage
them to lead an active, healthy and meaningful life. These activities
will also help enhance family relationships and promote intergenerational
interaction between the elderly and members from other age groups.

Seniors Activity Centres/Neighourhood
Links
Seniors Activity Centres (SACs) are set up under the joint
MCYS-HDB project to improve the living conditions of the elderly
residing in one-room HDB rental flats. The SACs provide a
support network for the elderly residents and provide a range
of services including information and referral services, maintaining
a register of the elderly persons, forming mutual help groups
and promoting social interactions. SACs will progressively
be enhanced to Neighbourhood Links (NLs) which have a wider
reach and role. NLs serve as neighbourhood
focal points for residents, both young and old. The objectives
of the NLs are to engage the elderly residents and others
in volunteer activities, promote inter-generational activities
amongst residents in the neighbourhood, assist the vulnerable
residents in obtaining appropriate services to meet their
needs, and to mobilize community resources in building a local
support network for the needy residents. location of SACs and NLs

isolation and boredom of the homebound and single elderly. The
service is currently provided islandwide by Lions Befrienders. Under the Befriender Service, volunteers are
recruited and trained to befriend, advise and assist lonely
senior citizens who are homebound or who have no family support.
The main target group is the elderly who live on their own or
with other elderly in one- or two-room HDB rental flats.
