Elder-Friendly Environment
 spacer
In the long term, our housing estates and environment will be made more elder-friendly through a series of initiatives.

Arrow Bullet Main and Interim Upgrading Programmes
Elder-friendly features such as grab bars in bathrooms and toilets, ramps, lift stopping on every floor (where technically feasible) are provided under the Standard Package of the on-going Main and Interim Upgrading Programmes.

Arrow Bullet Lift Upgrading Programme
In 2001, MND introduced the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP) to allow lifts to be provided on every level of high-rise HDB blocks, where feasible to improve the mobility of senior HDB residents.

Arrow Bullet IUP Plus
In view of the popularity of this programme, MND this year combined the Interim Upgrading Programme with the LUP into a new programme known as ' IUP Plus'. This will allow HDB to bring forward the lift-upgrading for more residents. IUP Plus will be implemented from 2002 onwards.

Arrow Bullet Studio Apartments
Studio Apartment (SA) blocks are built within HDB housing estates. The units are sold in a ready-to-move-in condition and come with elderly-friendly features such as lever taps, non-slip tiles, support hand bars, emergency pull-cords and heat detectors that activate alarms.

Arrow Bullet Code on Barrier-Free Accessibility in Buildings
The revised Code on Barrier-Free Accessibility in Buildings 2002, launched in July 2002, aims to make building designs inclusive so that persons with disabilities (including older persons) will be able to access buildings and participate in activities as an integral part of the community. One of the main changes in the latest revision, is the inclusion of non-mandatory design guidelines to cater to older persons. view the revised Code
