Assistive technology is the
application of technology to assist people with disabilities in
their activities. It comprises software, equipment and devices that
can increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals
with disabilities.
Assistive Technology (AT) Fund
At school and work, individuals with disabilities would require assistive devices to pursue mainstream education or gain employment so as to be self-reliant. The AT Fund provides means tested financial assistance that will help meet the high costs of purchasing these assistive devices. Applications must be recommended by selected VWOs and endorsed by the school or place of employment. More information can be obtained at NCSS website
www.ncss.org.sg or contact 6210 2542.
The
Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) provides various consultancy
services and training programmes to improve computer literacy among
people with disabilities. These include the PC Re-Use Scheme, Parent-Child
Computer Lessons, National IT Literacy Programme and PC Hardware
for Basic Users course. Some of these programmes are with the support
and sponsorship from
iDA.
More information can be obtained from SPD's website at www.spd.org.sg.
Other voluntary welfare organisations
also provide their members with assistive devices. The
Singapore Association of the Visually Handicappedprovides loans
of Braille and Talking Books, Descriptive Videos, sale of assistive
devices and other Braille or audio productions. The Association
can be contacted at
www.savh.org.sg.
The Disabled People's Association also looks into providing innovative
computer hard/software for people with disabilities and conducts
relevant computer courses. More information can be obtained at its
website at www.dpa.org.sg
