The Ageing Population

Singapore society is ageing rapidly. Over the past decade (1990 to 2000), the population of those aged 65 and above had grown annually by about 3.7%. Demographic projections show that the proportion of elderly will increase from about 7% today to 19% by the year 2030, or one in every five persons. This makes Singapore one of the fastest ageing population in Asia. The effects of this demographic transition will be pervasive.
In recognition of the wide implications, several high level committees have been formed since the 1980s to lead a co-ordinated national response to address the challenges and maximise the opportunities that an ageing population brings.
