The Ageing Population |
| Singapore society is ageing rapidly. Over the past decade (1990 to 2000), the population of those aged 65 and above had grown annually by about 3.7%. Demographic projections show that the proportion of elderly will increase from about 7% today to 19% by the year 2030, or one in every five persons. This makes Singapore one of the fastest ageing population in Asia. The effects of this demographic transition will be pervasive. |
 |
| In recognition of the wide implications, several high level committees have been formed since the 1980s to lead a co-ordinated national response to address the challenges and maximise the opportunities that an ageing population brings. |
