Giving a Say: Consulting Youth
"Youth: Creating Our Future"
In August 2004, MCYS initiated the 'Youth: Creating Our Future' public consultation exercise to tap on youth's aspirations for themselves and for Singapore, and solicit inputs to help shape the Government's agenda, policies and programmes for youth.
Over 2,000 youth from diverse backgrounds gave feedback during the public consultation through diverse feedback channels ranging from email, to sms messages, to postcards and faxes.
Good ideas that were received through the feedback process also subsequently formed the basis of new youth initiatives that were launched by MCYS.
For additional details, please visit the "Youth: Creating Our Future" Consultation Exercise page.
Youth Workgroups
To continue the process of youth engagement, MCYS then invited youth to be part of 4 thematic workgroups to look into issues relating to community involvement, national engagement, opportunities for all and youth entrepreneurship. Supported by MCYS, NYC and various relevant Ministries, the workgroups worked.
For details and completed reports, please visit the Youth Workgroups page.
National Youth Forum
The inaugural National Youth Forum, organised by the NYC, was held from 19 November to 23 December 2004. The event allowed 60 young Singaporeans, aged 17 to 25, to gain a broad-based understanding of national issues and policy-making. The programme included learning journeys, case studies, dialogues with decision-makers, peer consultation and debate.
MCYS and NYC will work together to enhance the National Youth Forum and extend its reach to more young Singaporeans.
Feedback Unit Outreach to Youth
The Feedback Unit will also expand its youth outreach efforts. The Unit has embarked on a schools outreach programme targeting Junior Colleges and tertiary institutions to encourage students to play an active role in giving their views on national issues and shaping national policies.
The Feedback Unit has also formed a Youth Panel to advice on the development of an online feedback website specifically targeted at youth. Going forward, the Feedback Unit will continually leverage on technology and other new and creative channels to reach out to young Singaporeans.
