Community-based step-down services
are put in place to allow the frail elderly to continue to live in
familiar environment with their loved ones. They also provide support
to the family and caregivers in caring for their elderly members.

Day Care Centres for
Senior Citizens
Day Care Centres (DCCs) for Senior Citizens are daytime programmes
that offer supportive help to the frail elderly while their
family members are at work. These centres run activities such
as maintenance exercises, social and recreational activities
to keep the elderly meaningfully occupied. These programmes
also provide relief to caregivers who need to run some errands
or simply in need of a break. Transport to and from the centres
can be arranged if necessary.

Home Help Service
The Home Help Service (HHS) is a programme that provides supports
to the frail elderly in their own homes by providing a range
of services that include meal delivery, laundry service, housekeeping,
help in personal care hygiene, help in running simple errands,
transport and escort service to hospitals and clinics.

Counselling
Elderly people who have difficulties relating their problems
to their family members and friends or those who simply need
a listening ear can approach agencies that provide counselling
service. The counselling service is provided by Family
Service Centres , Department of Psychological Medicine, National
University Hospital, hospitals, primary care services and SAGE Counselling Centre.
SAGE Counselling Centre
provides face-to-face counselling on family relationships,
psychological and emotional problems, as well as information
and referral assistance to the elderly and their caregivers.
Its telephone counselling is operated by older volunteers
who have been trained in para-counselling.

Sheltered Homes
Residential care via sheltered homes is also available for
those elderly who are without family support. Sheltered homes
are licensed under The Homes for the Aged Act (Cap 126A) and
come under the purview of MCYS. These homes cater primarily
to the accommodation needs of the destitute aged and low-income
elderly persons who are unable to live with their family because
of breakdown in relationships.

For active elderly who need
social contacts to keep them active and integrated in the community,
there are ample avenues, programmes and activities for them to remain
engaged and play an active role in the society. These include the
Mutual Help Scheme, Senior Citizens' Club, Seniors Activity Centres/Neighbourhood
Links and Befriender Service.
