Caring for the Elderly
Community-based step-down services are put in place to allow the frail elderly to continue to live in familiar environment with their loved ones. They also provide support to the family and caregivers in caring for their elderly members.

a) Day Care Centres for Senior Citizens
Day Care Centres (DCCs) for Senior Citizens are daytime programmes that offer supportive help to the frail elderly while their family members are at work. These centres run activities such as maintenance exercises, social and recreational activities to keep the elderly meaningfully occupied. These programmes also provide relief to caregivers who need to run some errands or simply in need of a break. Transport to and from the centres can be arranged if necessary.

Location of DCCs.

b) Home Help Service
The Home Help Service (HHS) is a programme that provides supports to the frail elderly in their own homes by providing a range of services that include meal delivery, laundry service, housekeeping, help in personal care hygiene, help in running simple errands, transport and escort service to hospitals and clinics.

Location of HHSs.

c) Counselling
Elderly people who have difficulties relating their problems to their family members and friends or those who simply need a listening ear can approach agencies that provide counselling service. The counselling service is provided by Family Service Centres , Department of Psychological Medicine, National University Hospital, hospitals, primary care services and SAGE Counselling Centre.

SAGE Counselling Centre provides face-to-face counselling on family relationships, psychological and emotional problems, as well as information and referral assistance to the elderly and their caregivers. Its telephone counselling is operated by older volunteers who have been trained in para-counselling.

d) Sheltered Homes
Residential care via sheltered homes is also available for those elderly who are without family support. Sheltered homes are licensed under The Homes for the Aged Act (Cap 126A) and come under the purview of MCYS. These homes cater primarily to the accommodation needs of the destitute aged and low-income elderly persons who are unable to live with their family because of breakdown in relationships.
Location of Sheltered Homes.

For active elderly who need social contacts to keep them active and integrated in the community, there are ample avenues, programmes and activities for them to remain engaged and play an active role in the society. These include the Mutual Help Scheme, Senior Citizens' Club, Seniors Activity Centres/Neighbourhood Links and Befriender Service.
