Mrs Yu-Foo attends 13th APEC Women Leaders' Network Meeting
Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, led the Singapore delegation to the 13th APEC Women Leaders' Network (WLN) Meeting held in Arequipa, Peru from 12 to 14 May 2008. Organised by the Ministry of Women and Social Development (MIMDES) of Peru in cooperation with the APEC Secretariat, the meeting was held to identify knowledge and tools needed to advance sustainable socio-economic businesses for women entrepreneurs and help them incorporate their business into the formal economic process. More than 300 participants from the private sector, academia, government and civil society attended the meeting, which carried the theme of "Successful Women, Successful Economies".
On 11 May 2008, Mrs Yu-Foo paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Women and Social Development, Dr Susana Pinilla Cisneros, and congratulated her Ministry on hosting the APEC WLN and Gender Focal Point Network (GFPN) meetings.

Mrs Yu-Foo addressed the WLN on 13 May 2008 and extended a warm welcome to delegates to attend the 14th WLN which Singapore would be hosting in 2009.
At the close of the meeting on 14 May 2008, the Chairperson of the 13th WLN Meeting, Dr Dolores Tasayco, Vice-Minister of Women Issues, Peru, handed over the chairmanship to Mr Chew Hock Yong, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, who represented Singapore.

MCYS participates in 6th Gender Focal Point Network Meeting
Mr Chew Hock Yong, Deputy Secretary, MCYS, led the Singapore delegation to the 6th GFPN meeting held on 17 to 18 May 2008 in Tacna, Peru. Thirteen economies attended the meeting which culminated in a report which has been submitted to the Steering Committee on ECOTECH (SCE). The meeting concluded with the handing over of the chairmanship to Singapore which will host the 7th GFPN in 2009.

On 17 January 2008, MCYS welcomed Mdm Tan Heping, Vice Chairman of the Women's Federation of Guangxi. Mdm Tan was accompanied by 12 officials from the

Guangxi Public Security Department, Justice Department, Commerce Department, Agriculture Department and Public Health Department. The delegation was briefed on Singapore's experience protecting our women and children, and gender issues in Singapore. Subsequently, the delegation visited Learning Vision @ Revenue House, a workplace childcare centre, and the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO).

The Women's Desk, MCYS, recently hosted Senator Daisy Danjuma of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 15 October 2007. Senator Danjuma is also Chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs & Youth Development. Senator Danjuma was given a brief on the progress of women in Singapore. Her visit culminated with a tour of the premises of Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO).

MCYS was also honoured to receive Ms Meg Munn MP, UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, on 20 November 2007. Mrs Tan Hwee Seh, Coordinating Director/ Corporate Management, briefed Ms Munn regarding women's progress in

areas such as employment and education. Ms Munn was accompanied by HE Paul Madden, High Commissioner, British High Commission.
Mrs Yu-Foo attends 8th Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers Meeting in Kampala, Uganda
Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports was in Kampala, Uganda from 11 to 14 June 2007 to attend the 8th Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers Meeting.
Chaired by Hon Syda Bbumba, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Republic of Uganda, 8WAMM was a platform for Ministers to discuss, share experiences and plan for initiatives concerning gender equality. Representatives from 32 countries attended 8WAMM.
 
Mrs Yu-Foo participated in breakfast meetings and consultation/ dialogue sessions with other Ministers and Heads of Delegation where she spoke of her experiences championing women's empowerment.

During her visit to Uganda, Mrs Yu-Foo was also warmly received by a group of Singaporeans based there.
Singapore hosts the Fifth Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Women
MCYS recently hosted the Fifth ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW) Meeting at Orchard Hotel, Singapore. Held from 2 to 3 November 2006, the Fifth ACW Meeting was attended by more than 50 delegates from the 10 ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Confederation of Women's Organisations.

The theme for the Meeting was 'Enhancing Partnerships for the Economic Empowerment of ASEAN Women.
Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Singapore, delivered the opening address. She noted the challenges brought about by globalisation and called for commitment from key stakeholders to ensure that all women have access to resources and opportunities so that they could participate in and benefit from the country's development.
During the Meeting, delegates provided updates on key priorities for the advancement of women in their respective countries and discussed ways to strengthen regional cooperation.
MCYS also organised a Work-Life Harmony Workshop on 1 November 2006. Delegates learnt about Singapore's work-life movement and were given a tour of IBM Singapore, a winner of the Work-Life Excellence Awards 2006, where they witnessed first-hand the organisation's family-friendly initiatives.

Mrs Yu-Foo Attends Inaugural East Asia Gender Equality Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo, Japan
Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, was in Tokyo, Japan to attend the East Asia Gender Equality Ministerial Meeting. The Meeting was held from 30 June to 1 July 2006.
The two-day Meeting was the initiative of Dr Kuniko Inoguchi, Minister of State for Gender Equality and Social Affairs, Japan. The Meeting was an avenue for Ministers to exchange views on the importance of gender equality and the ways and means to promote gender equality. The Meeting also strived to examine ways of promoting gender equality in East Asia by prioritising the importance of gender equality in the region and beyond. Mrs Yu-Foo delivered a statement on the progress of gender mainstreaming in Singapore and participated in Roundtable discussions.

During her visit to Tokyo, Mrs Yu-Foo also took the opportunity to meet with representatives from GEWEL (Global Enhancement of Women's Executive Leadership). The organisation provides support and training to Japanese businesswomen to expand and develop their leadership abilities. It also gives assistance to women who are starting their own businesses. Mrs Yu-Foo and key GEWEL representatives discussed the challenges that women in Singapore and Japan face today in the workplace and at home.

During her visit, Mrs Yu-Foo also visited public and people sector facilities to study Japan's social safety net system and facilities for the elderly and family.
In Celebration of Women
Five days. 120 hours. Discovery 120 was a fun-filled mega-event with activities held all over Singapore from 8 to 12 March 2006 to mark International Women's Day.
 
Organised by the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO), Discovery 120 aimed to showcase women's achievements and roles, and to bring attention to their interests and capabilities.

Participants got to take their pick of the more than 50 activities by, for and pertaining to women, which were organised by 42 partner organisations.
From arts events, entrepreneurship talks to health screenings, Discovery 120 promises a fun and rewarding experience for everyone.
Participants could visit a Senior Citizens' Home, go on a Fabric of the Nation guided tour, learn to bake muffins at Bugis Street and attend a career profiling session, amongst the myriad of exciting activities.
Discovery 120 was launched on 22 February 2006 with our Minister-of-State, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon as Guest of Honour.
In her speech, Mrs Yu-Foo said, "Discovery 120 is an excellent example of what organisations from the private and public sectors can achieve if they come together to showcase as well as celebrate the contributions women make to our lives and to our nation. I am sure Discovery 120 will encourage even more women to come forward to contribute after finding out more about the types of programmes and activities available to them." More than 3,000 participants signed up for the discovery hunt, which culminated with a Celebration Event on 12 March 2006. Held at the Singapore Management University, the event was graced by SCWO's Chief Patron, Mrs S. R. Nathan. Participants brought their Discovery Guides to the event in exchange for goodie bags. The guests were also treated to sports demonstrations and drama and dance performances. The stage games and lucky draw ensured that many left with attractive prizes and broad smiles on their faces.
Launch of 'Be an Active Woman' campaign
The 'Be an Active Woman' Outreach Campaign was launched on 13 November 2005 at the Jurong East Sports and Cultural Centre. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports was Guest-of-Honour at the event, which drew a crowd of about 6,000 participants. Launch of Active Woman picture
The event was organised by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and Women & Sport Group, together with partners, including the People's Association Women Integration Network (PA WIN), NTUC Club (Women Committee), the MCYS Women's Desk, the Singapore Council of Women's Organisation and the Health Promotion Board (HPB). The primary aim of the event was to encourage more women to start exercising and be active through a set of simple exercises. Participants were taught a new "Bone Up" exercise routine, a simple 8-step routine that involves a series of weight-bearing exercises targeting the forearm, hips and spine - common risk areas for osteoporosis. Done daily, the exercises can reduce risk of the disease by increasing muscular strength and slowing bone mineral loss. Seminar Brings Women Together to Address Women's Needs
More than 400 women leaders came together at Suntec City Convention Hall on 24 Sep 2005 for the first ever "Women's Seminar". The seminar was jointly organised by the Women's Desk of our Ministry and the NTUC Women's Committee.
Our Ministry's participation was helmed by our Minister of State, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon while NTUC Women's Committee was led by Mdm Halimah Yaacob, Assistant Secretary-General of NTUC and MP of Jurong GRC.
The seminar discussed the recommendations developed by six workgroups in the following areas: women leadership and mentoring; women's health; women's lifeskills (with emphasis on IT and financial literacy skills); work-family harmony; micro and social enterprise for women; and women volunteerism and philanthropy. Some of the recommendations included the establishment of a central repository of information on enablers of Social Enterprise and Micro Enterprise and how a Micro enterprise could be established. The idea of a Women's Register, a database of successful women from all walks of life, was also mooted.
